Throughout the month of February 2024, our pro bono lawyers within the Center for Justice and advocacy have been at the forefront combating sexual gender based violence(SGBV) in the Districts of Certa Foundation’s intervention including Nyagatare, Gatsibo, Rwamagana, Kirehe, Musanze and in the city of Kigali respectively. Our victim centered interventionsincluding free legal representation to the victims by filing civil party claims and offering free legal aid services to the victim from the onset of legal proceedings to the delivery of judgment by competent courts are dedicated to fostering a safer and more equitable society for all. Collaborating closely with families, parents, local leaders, and youth, our pro bono lawyers have conducted impactful awareness campaigns across eight districts, rallying communities and empowering them to stand against SGBV. Beyond awareness, our legal team has been instrumental in providing essential legal representation toGBV survivors, ensuring they not only have access to justice but also the support they need to rebuild their lives.

In a recent milestone, Certa Foundation secured a significant victory in a Sexual Gender Based Violence case, where the perpetrator was rightfully found guilty and sentenced to 10 years in prison. Additionally, a substantial order of5,000,000Rwf in damages was awarded to the victim. These triumphs are not just legal victories; they are tangible steps towards justice and healing for those impacted by SGBV.

We are deeply grateful for the unwavering support from our partners who stand with us on this journey. Our collaborative efforts are making a tangible difference in the lives of GBV survivors, offering them hope, support, and the promise of a brighter future. Together, let us continue our united front against GBV, striving to create a society where every individual can live free from fear and violence.
