On April 4th, the Center for Law and Innovation was thrilled to host the Finals of the Inaugural National Negotiation Competition, in collaboration with Wægger Negotiation Institute, and the Rwanda Bar Association. This event under the CLI Alternative Dispute Resolution Lab aims to sharpen negotiation skills and promote a culture of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) among law students, and the business community, and aligns with the Rwandan Judiciary's vision of building a community of expert negotiators.

The competition focused on scenarios in Intellectual Property and Trademark law—an emerging area in Rwanda that combines law, tech and innovation.  We were fortunate to have two external professionals who judged the competition and chose the winning team :  Victor Mugabe from the Kigali International Arbitration Center and Remy Munyaneza from Rwanda Bar Association highlighting the exceptional potential and skills exhibited by the participants. Their remarks underscored the path to becoming formidable negotiators and dealmakers. Special thanks to Roar Thun Wægger from Waegner Negotiation Institute, whose support and expertise empowered our participants to navigate negotiations effectively.

Emmanuel Patrick was recognised as the best speaker and Cynthia Nkusi as the emerging talent. The participants shared their profound learning experiences and the lasting impact and friendship created beyond the competition. Congratulations to the winning team from University of Lay Adventists of Kigali, Comson W. Vaye and Emmanuel Patrick, who are set to represent Rwanda at the International Negotiation Competition. We extend our gratitude to all participants and partners for their dedication and support in making this competition a success.

Stay tuned for more updates and join us in this journey to promoting the culture of mediation, negotiation and alternative dispute resolution within the Rwandan and African legal communities.
