On February 25, 2025, Certa Foundation, through its Center for Justice and Advocacy (CJA), participated in the official launch of community forums in Kirehe District, Mahama Sector under the theme: “Twubake umuryango utekanye; Twite ku buzima bwo mu mutwe; Turwanya ihohoterwa rishingiye ku gitsina” (Building a Safe Family; Prioritizing Mental Health; Combating Gender-Based Violence)

This initiative provided a crucial platform for local leaders, law enforcement, and community members to discuss Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV), mental health, and the role of legal support in combating violence.

The discussions opened with Me Uwizeyimana Dative, Senior Pro Bono Lawyer at Certa Foundation, introducing Me Euphrasie Harerimana, the new pro bono lawyer dedicated to serving Kirehe District. She emphasized the importance of legal assistance for survivors, ensuring they receive free legal support and representation to pursue justice. She also educated the community on proper handling of GBV-related evidence, reinforcing the need for timely reporting and legal action.

Ms. Mukaneza Pelagie, Head of the National Women’s Council (NWC) in Kirehe District, highlighted the power of family support in preventing GBV. She urged community members to embrace open communication, respect, and emotional support, encouraging the use of kind expressions like “Nkwihoreze shenge” (I’ve got you, my dear) to foster empathy and unity in households.

Chief Inspector of Police Jonas Bayavuge reinforced the critical role of law enforcement in addressing GBV cases. He urged citizens to report violence promptly and reminded them of Rwanda’s core values of justice and unity, emphasizing that community collaboration is essential in fighting GBV.

The event also featured insights from the Executive Secretary of Mahama Sector, who encouraged local leaders and residents to take an active role in societal development by speaking out against GBV and supporting victims.

The forum ended with a strong message of collaboration and continued action. Certa Foundation expresses deep gratitude to Kirehe District, Alight, and other partners for their unwavering support. Together, we remain committed to empowering communities, providing legal aid, and ensuring a safer, GBV-free future.
