In 2023, in anticipation of Rwanda's Data Protection and Privacy Law, the Center for Law and Innovation launched an exclusive training program aimed at empowering legal practitioners and aspiring Data Protection Officers (DPOs) to learn the operational aspects of the new law. This program was designed to inform legal professionals about the new law and equip potential DPOs with the skills to manage and build an effective privacy program.

The training program stands out for its innovative approach, including monthly mentorship,  personalized guidance, and ensuring the best performers are well-prepared to implement data protection measures and uphold the highest data security standards. Participants gain hands-on experience in implementing a privacy program, data processing accountability and documentation, risk assessment, policy development, and incident management, making the curriculum comprehensive and practical.

The wrap up of the data protection session was held on May 5th 2024, the Center for Law and Innovation hosted an engaging refresher training session for previously trained DPOs. The session was led by our Associate Director of Professional Development, Ridwan Oloyede. During the session, participants were guided through foundational data protection principles such as data minimization, lawfulness, and transparency, underlining their critical importance in maintaining robust data protection compliance. Additionally, the training highlighted practical considerations, including complexities of international data transfers, ensuring that DPOs comprehensively understand how to navigate cross-border data flow while stead fastly adhering to regulatory requirements.

The session also dedicated significant attention to the strategic drafting of essential documents like privacy policies, crucial for fostering secure data handling practices within their organizations. Furthermore, the session underscored the pivotal role of DPOs as the primary points of contact for data subjects and as the authoritative figures within their organizations, emphasizing their integral role in maintaining transparency and trust in data handling processes. As the session drew close, participants left with renewed purpose and confidence, armed with refreshed knowledge and practical skills to elevate data protection compliance within their respective organizations. This transformative experience underscored the indispensable role of continuous professional development in navigating the ever-evolving terrain of data protection, reinforcing the commitment to excellence and innovation in safeguarding sensitive information.
