On September 21st, 2024, Certa Foundation, through the Center for Justice and Advocacy, proudly participated in a one-day transformative training on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) at Gashora Girls Academy of Science and Technology. The training aimed to empower young girls with crucial knowledge and skills to navigate their lives confidently and advocate for their rights.

The Center for Justice and Advocacy was represented by the Program Coordinators, Maliza Latifah (Economic Gender Justice) and Laura Kagina (Gender Policy Advocacy). The session provided a comprehensive overview of legal education and sexual and reproductive health rights, equipping the students with a strong foundation to understand and assert their rights.

Anne-Marie Annies Oelschlager, MD., Professor of Pediatrics and Adolescent Gynecology from the University of Washington, delivered an informative session on menstrual health. The girls learned how to manually calculate their menstrual cycles and engage in critical discussions on the importance of abstinence in preventing sexually transmitted diseases and early pregnancies.

Navigating Relationships and Technology-Facilitated Violence. Our team further engaged the students in discussions on technology-mediated violence, consent, and recognizing relationship flags (red, yellow, and green), providing the social and legal frameworks around these crucial issues. We also highlighted data protection and privacy, linking them to SRHR.

As emphasized by Atete Rugege, the Principal of Gashora Girls, such conversations are essential for youth before they leave school, empowering them to navigate life confidently and inform. Together, we planted seeds of awareness and advocacy, inspiring future leaders to champion SRHR and stand up for their rights.

This training is part of Certa Foundation's ongoing efforts to promote gender equality, empower women, and ensure that every individual has access to comprehensive SRHR information and services. By collaborating with educational institutions like Gashora Girls Academy, we aim to create a ripple effect of change, empowering young women to become agents of transformation in their communities.
