Policy Hackathon
We are delighted to announce the successful conclusion of the five-week virtual technology policy hackathon organized by the Center for Law & Innovation. Hosted between June 24 to July 31, lawyers, policymakers, and tech enthusiasts from across different countries in Africa gained insights into new regulatory models, learnt to tackle complex policy challenges surrounding emerging technologies and developed capacity to work collaboratively to propose innovative policy interventions.
Facilitators included Ridwan Oloyede, Dr. Patricia Boshe, Leonard Otuonye Ugbajah, Dr. Emmanuel Salami, Victoria Manya, Ilamosi Ekanimoh, Kasim Sondagi, Chris Songa, Dr. Ololade Shyllon and Joseph Ishie who shared their experience across topics including introduction to theories of regulation and regulatory models, introduction to regulatory frameworks and emerging technologies, integrating regulatory models with sector-specific laws, regulation of specific technologies, ethics in technology regulation, global regulatory perspectives, stakeholder engagement in regulatory processes, applying sandboxing in tech regulation and future trends in technology and regulation.
The participants were then grouped into six teams, each with a mentor, and challenged to craft a policy. These were presented on the last day of July and followed by a Cafe Juridique on the theme “Future-proofing regulations for a fast-paced world: The role of regulators”. The feedback from the participants was overwhelming. Testimonials included: “With the help of our mentor and the knowledge gained from the hackathon, my team and I are incredibly proud of the work and presentations we developed during this event. The experience not only broadened our understanding of regulation but also significantly enhanced our skills and perspectives, enabling us to create impactful solutions” We are grateful to the facilitators, coaches and team for their tremendous support to ensure the success of this initiative.
