Rwanda's Climate Action Agenda: From Vulnerability to Resilience
This article aims to analyze the impact and efficacy of Rwanda's proactive climate action, emphasizing its commitments to international agreements like the Paris Agreement, as well as national frameworks and initiatives such as landscape restoration projects; the Nyandungu Wetland Eco-tourism Park and Green Gicumbi project; participation in carbon markets, and the Ireme Invest Program. Qualitative and quantitative analysis as well as case studies will be used to evaluate the efficacy of available initiatives. Initial findings show the effectiveness of those initiatives in mitigating climate change and enhancing resilience through landscape restoration, biodiversity protection, and contribution to sustainable development in general. However, challenges such as financial constraints, limited public engagement, and reliance on fossil fuels hinder the sustainability and scalability of the available mitigation and adaptation actions. This article recommends leveraging climate funds from diverse sources, enhancing institutional frameworks and cooperation with private sector agents, including Non-Governmental organizations and climate activists, adopting emerging technologies, promoting public awareness, and capacity-building, as measures to address existing challenges and support Rwanda's journey towards climate resilience and achieving sustainable development goals.
