TFGBV Awareness campaign at IPRC: TSS
On November 27, 2024, Certa Foundation, through its Center for Justice and Advocacy, in partnership with Kvinna till Kvinna, held a dynamic and engaging session at IPRC: TSS Kicukiro as part of the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign. The session, centered around the theme “The Role and Risk of Technology in Combating and Facilitating Gender-Based Violence,” focused on empowering students to create safer digital environments, raise awareness, and advocate for respectful online behavior.
The discussions began by emphasizing the critical role technology plays in both facilitating and combating GBV. Students were educated on the significance of responsible digital behavior, reporting harmful content, and understanding their role in shaping positive online interactions. Dative Uwizeyimana, Program Coordinator for Access to Justice at Certa Foundation, introduced the campaign and described the impact of technology on perpetuating gender-based violence through sextortion, cyberbullying, and non-consensual image sharing. She urged students to become ambassadors for change in their digital communities.
Laura Kagina, Program Coordinator for Gender Policy Advocacy, further explored the issues of TFGBV, including deepfakes, child pornography, sextortion, and online harassment, providing real-world examples of how these issues severely impact mental health and well-being. Her interactive approach equipped students with practical knowledge to recognize, prevent, and report TFGBV, encouraging them to advocate for safer digital spaces.
Olivier Niragire, Headmaster of IPRC, praised Certa Foundation’s work in equipping students with vital skills to address critical issues like GBV. , he emphasized the importance of collaboration in combating digital abuse. The event highlighted how such initiatives can positively impact the students' awareness and preparation for future challenges. Students actively participated in discussions, asking insightful questions about digital safety, online harassment, and how they could support victims within their communities.
The event concluded with remarks from Latifah Mariza, Program Coordinator for Economic Gender Justice at Certa Foundation, who encouraged students to continue leading by example in advocating for safer digital spaces.
