The Center for Justice and Advocacy, in accordance with its mandate and in collaboration with the French Embassy, has been diligently working with single and teen mothers with disabilities in Musanze District. Our efforts are supported by three dedicated members of the Certa Foundation team, two of whom also live with disabilities. Our interventions encompass a wide spectrum of interventions, ranging from providing free legal aid assistance and representation, facilitating community based groups and promoting economic empowerment.

During our March 2024 visit to our beneficiaries in Musanze, the women surprised us with a play, entirely written and performed by our beneficiaries titled "KAREMA" - a derogatory term often used to refer to persons with disabilities. Through this play, they shed light on the myriad challenges they encounter, including mistreatment from their families. These challenges range from being denied access to education to facing societal stigma manifested in derogatory names associated with their disabilities. Moreover, they bravely addressed the pervasive issue of sexual and gender-based violence they endure, compounded by financial hardships, necessitating specialized support.

Our beneficiaries expressed frustration with common misconceptions surrounding their abilities, such as the assumption that only externally visible disabilities are recognized. Despite facing multiple disabilities, many of them firmly believe in their capability and worthiness. "If only we were not excluded, and if opportunities were not only made available but also accessible, we are sure everyone could see just how able and worthy we can be," remarked one beneficiary.

In their portrayal, our beneficiaries emphasized the transformative impact of the Certa Foundation's assistance, particularly through our stationed pro bono lawyer and her team. From legal representation in court to educational sessions on rights awareness, mediation with families and fathers of their children, to covering health insurance costs, our support has been instrumental in their lives. Some beneficiaries proudly show cased designs they created from the kitenge fabrics received during the December 2023Donation Drive, an annual initiative organized by the Certa Foundation.

As we discussed upcoming projects, the focus remained on economic empowerment. Our initial project “TINYUKA POWERUP PROJECT '' which is centered around access to justice and economic empowerment through pig farming, a choice made by the beneficiaries themselves. They shared their plans to maximize the benefits from this venture, highlighting their commitment and enthusiasm. Our day concluded with a visit to the shed where the pigs will be reared.

While reflecting on the impact of our visit, we are deeply saddened to inform you of the passing of one of our beneficiaries - a teen mother grappling with both physical disabilities and uncontrolled epilepsy. She succumbed to an epileptic seizure, leaving behind a grieving mother, daughter, and an extended family. Her memory serves as a poignant reminder of the urgency of advocacy, which must persist unabated.
